Places to Visit
Wangdue Phodrang Dzong
The administrative and religious centre of the district is this historic fortress that sits on the
confluence of two rivers. It was rebuilt after a terrible fire, and is marked by its gold-painted pinnacle and its traditional Bhutanese architecture.
Phobjikha Valley
This glacial valley is one of the most precious natural sites of Bhutan where the rare and endangered black-necked cranes go to rest in the winter season. It's a popular spot for nature
enthusiasts and birdwatchers, thanks to its expansive marshes and tranquil setting.
Gangtey Monastery
This old monastery, also called Gangteng Goemba, is located on a hillock of forest in front of the
Phobjikha Valley. One of the most spiritually rich locations of the area, its colorful murals and
prayer halls in a calm atmosphere.
Rinchengang Village
It is one of the oldest villages in Bhutan and the people here are stone masons of many generations who have contributed to the construction of the great dzongs of Bhutan. The stone
house buildings are grouped together, providing a glimpse into Bhutan's traditional architecture and building techniques.
Sha Radap Lhakhang
This holy shrine, situated within the dzong premises, is a shrine dedicated to the guardian deity of
the Wangdue region. It is a place of everyday faith and tradition, with locals visiting with newborns for blessings.
Pele La Pass
This high pass is more than 11,000 feet high and forms the border between western and central Bhutan. It is a very scenic place for mountain drives with its steep switchbacks as well as
sweeping views of the valley.
Adha & Rukha Villages
South of Wangdue town, these lovely villages provide true "home stays" and friendly locals. They can taste genuine Bhutanese cuisine, learn about Bhutanese customs, and enjoy the village life of the country.

Best Time to Visit
Autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) are the optimum seasons in which
to visit Wangdue Phodrang as the weather is mild and the sky is clear, perfect for sightseeing,
trekking and exploring the valley. It also is the season of the world-famous Black-Necked Crane
Festival in Phobjikha Valley and the Wangdue Tshechu festival. Migratory black necked cranes can be seen during the winter season from December to February, and during the monsoon season (June to August), the district has lush greenery and vibrant landscapes, with the valleys being quiet during both of these seasons.
